I'm so happy that the revised Patient Handling and Mobility Assessments (by the Facilities Guidelines Institute with support from Hillrom) has been published under the careful stewardship of Mary Matz. I can hardly believe it's been ten years (!) since we wrote the first version!
This 476-page "white paper" is the work of a whole group of dedicated safe patient handling professionals and I'm honored to be counted among them. It covers topics ranging from program rationale to planning, design and construction to a vision for future programs. Several lifetimes of experience in these pages!
My chapter is on making the business case for a safe patient handling and mobility program. It draws on my work applying decision analysis to answer key questions and make the business case at a number of health care organizations, including Stanford Health, Ascension Health, and the Veterans' Health Administration. Graphics, results, and data are included.
This chapter is both a guide to making the business case and a reference for institutions considering launching a program: if it worked for them, it can work for you!
